Stability of the uniform ferroelectric nematic phase

چکیده

Recent discovery of the ferroelectric nematic phase N_F resurrects a question about stability uniform state with respect to formation either standard for solid ferroelectrics domain structure, or often occurring in liquid crystals space modulation polarization vector P (and naturally coupled director. In this work within Landau mean-field theory we investigate linear minimal model admitting conventional paraelectric N and phases. Our model, (besides terms expansion over director gradients) includes, also crystals, flexoelectric coupling term f overlooked literature (although similar by its symmetry coupling) flexo-dipolar coupling. We find that easy-plane anisotropy case loses one-dimensional two-dimensional modulation. For non-zero 2D threshold is always higher than 1D counterpart. No any instability at all if one neglects dipole-flexoelectric easy-axis both thresholds are same, can occur even without flexo-dipolr speculate phases modulations be identified discussed [see M.P.Rosseto, J.V.Selinger, Physical Review E, volume 101, page 052707 (2020)] single splay double nematics.

Stability of the Nematic Phase for the Hard Ellipsoid Fluid

We investigate, by Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics computer simulation techniques, the stability of the nematic phase of hard ellipsoids of revolution with axial ratio 3, for system sizes in the range N = 108{576. We conclude that the phase is not, as had previously been suggested, rendered unstable by increasing the number of particles in this range. The diiculties of making accurate estima...

Orientational coupling amplification in ferroelectric nematic colloids.

We investigated the physical properties of low concentration ferroelectric nematic colloids, using calorimetry, optical methods, infrared spectroscopy, and capacitance studies. The resulting homogeneous colloids possess a significantly amplified nematic orientational coupling. We find that the nematic orientation coupling increases by approximately 10% for particle concentrations of 0.2%. A man...

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals

Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...

Theory of ferroelectric nanoparticles in nematic liquid crystals.

Recent experiments have reported that ferroelectric nanoparticles have drastic effects on nematic liquid crystals-increasing the isotropic-nematic transition temperature by about 5 K, and greatly increasing the sensitivity to applied electric fields. To understand these effects, we develop a theory for the statistical mechanics of ferroelectric nanoparticles in liquid crystals. This theory pred...
